Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a senior legal partner to trading, commercial, and management teams, providing strategic and practical advice on complex, high-value transactions
  • Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of a wide range of trading and commercial agreements across coal, biofuels, and palm oil
  • Structure and advise on transactions, including pricing mechanisms, delivery terms, risk allocation, and mitigation strategies
  • Oversee end-to-end transaction support, from sourcing and contracting to execution and post-deal matters
  • Provide legal oversight on shipping, logistics, and supply chain arrangements (including charterparties, freight, and storage agreements)
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including export/import, trade compliance, and industry-specific requirements
  • Manage and resolve disputes and claims (e.g., quality, quantity, delay), including strategy development and coordination with external counsel
  • Support and advise on trade finance arrangements, including review of LCs, guarantees, and related security documents
  • Develop and improve contract templates, internal policies, and legal processes to enhance efficiency and risk control
  • Engage with senior stakeholders, external partners, and advisors, including international counterparties
  • Monitor regulatory developments and provide proactive guidance to the business

The Successful Applicant

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Law; advanced degree or professional qualification is a plus
  • Minimum 12 years of relevant legal experience, ideally within commodity trading, energy, agribusiness, or related sectors
  • Experience in prominent law firm is a plus
  • Strong track record in handling complex, high-value commercial and cross-border transactions
  • Deep experience in drafting and negotiating trading, supply, and logistics-related agreements
  • Solid understanding of trade finance, shipping, and regulatory frameworks relevant to commodity trading
  • Proven ability to operate as a senior legal advisor and business partner to commercial teams
  • Fluent in English with excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills
  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to balance legal risk and business objectives
  • Hands-on, proactive, and able to operate effectively in a fast-paced, deal-driven environment
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage and influence senior internal and external parties
  • Leadership capability, with experience mentoring junior team members being an advantage
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and sound judgment
